Create a cascading style sheet

You can create external and internal cascading style sheets (CSS) and inline styles to format a web page and its content. For information about each type of style sheet, see Controlling appearances with styles.

After creating either type of CSS, you use the Manage Styles, Apply Styles, and CSS Properties panels to create and manage your styles. For more information, see Create a style and Modify a style.

To create an external CSS

Do one of the following:

  • On the File menu, point to New and then click CSS.

  • On the File menu, click New. In the New dialog box, on the Page tab, in the list on the left click General, in the list on the right click CSS, and then click OK.

  • Click the arrow on New DocumentCc295582.b7177625-b97b-492c-b07f-20410d26e860(en-us,Expression.40).png in the Common or Standard toolbars and then click CSS Cc295582.4aae3f4b-3dd9-427b-aaa0-ad14840ef0ea(en-us,Expression.40).png.

  • To create a new external CSS and create a new style for the style sheet, in the Apply Styles or Manage Styles panel or the Style toolbar, click New StyleCc295582.286f6ccb-09db-4cdc-90ec-b7cb537b4121(en-us,Expression.40).png, and then in the New Style dialog box, set the Define in option to New style sheet.

To create an internal CSS

  1. Open the web page you want to contain the CSS.

  2. In the Apply Styles or Manage Styles panels, on the Style toolbar, or on the Format menu, click New Style.

  3. In the New Style dialog box, in the Define in drop-down menu, select Current page.

To create an external CSS from a style sheet template

  1. On the File menu, click New.

  2. In the New dialog box, on the Page tab, select Style Sheets.

  3. Select a style sheet and click OK.
